Green Party’s festival was respectable
Recently on two consecutive days, The News Journal printed comments from Dick Cathcart, without bothering to check if they were correct, stating the Green Party of Delaware marched in last year’s Delaware City parade with pictures of Gov. Markell in a hangman’s noose. We maintain that did not happen. We agree that would be an inappropriate image, and it would be contrary to the Green Party’s commitment to nonviolence.
Whether Mr. Cathcart was given bad information or simply has a poor memory, we cannot say. But simply stated; it did not happen. We request that Mr. Cathcart admits he is wrong or that he provides evidence to the contrary.
As for the idea that families were somehow unable to have an enjoyable time, the reception we received last year in the staging area and along the parade route, from both volunteers and spectators, was overwhelmingly positive. Parents pointed out the silly pirates to their kids, and had a good laugh, as well. There were shouts of affirmation as we made our way down Clinton Street. We did draw a few heckles (about five) from PBF Refinery supporters (as is their right), but mostly the response was favorable and appreciative.
