If Stein/Baraka were not an option, and only the corporate parties were on the ballot:

• 61% said they would not have voted
• 25% would have voted for Clinton
• 14% would have voted for Trump

We’re Taking the “Spoiler” Issue Head-On!

FROM STEIN/BARAKA HEADQUARTERS

WE ARE TAKING THE “SPOILER” ISSUE HEAD-ON!

This was a rotten election, friend. You know it, I know it, and the American people know it.

But some in the Democratic Party are attacking and smearing the Stein/Baraka Green Party ticket as “spoilers.”

Our first – and most vigorous response – is simple:

What they call “spoiling” we call … PARTICIPATION!

spoiler_chart.jpgWe ARE going to participate in elections. We WILL exercise our fundamental right to the democratic process. If anyone thinks our participation is spoiling, then let’s admit the problem is a rotten voting system that forces voters to vote against the candidate they hate the most, rather than for the one they like the most. Crazy, right?

Our second response is – do the math.

Exit polling showed that most Stein supporters voted only because the Green Party was on the ballot.

If Stein/Baraka was not an option, and only the corporate parties were on the ballot:

• 61% said they would not have voted
• 25% would have voted for Clinton
• 14% would have voted for Trump

The Green Party vote was smaller than the margin of difference between Clinton and Trump in all battleground states with the possible exception of Michigan.

Regardless – the solution to a potential “spoiler” scenario should never be to silence political opposition and limit democracy. We need more voices and more choices in our democracy. The American people deserve a voting system that allows us to vote our values, not our fears.

The good news is that there is a great solution to this problem. It’s called…

RANKED-CHOICE VOTING!!!

Ranked-choice voting allows voters to rank candidates in their order of preference (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so on.) If a candidate has more than 50% of the first choice votes, they win.

If no candidate gets the majority of the #1 votes, then the candidate with the fewest first choices is eliminated. The voters who selected the eliminated candidate as their first choice will then have their votes added to the totals of their second choice. This process continues until a candidate has more than half of the active votes for only two candidates remain.

ranked-choice-voting_sample_ballot.pngUnder this system, potential voters are empowered and encouraged to come to the polls because there will be more choices of candidates and the individual voter ballot will have more impact.

The Green Party stands ready to take a leadership role in right choice voting across America. Please donate now so we can do just that!

We need staff and resources to advance the concept of ranked choice voting all across the nation. We also need to abolish the electoral college. We need to create an independent Citizens Debate Commission.

We need fair ballot access laws. We need to end disenfranchisement of potential voters based on our racist criminal justice system. We need publicly-funded elections.

In other words – we must democratize our electoral process!

The Green Party is prepared to be an instrument for power to the people. We will continue to build this movement and this party long after the election. Will you stand with us and help us advance the concepts of ranked-choice voting nationwide?

We do not consent to Donald Trump and right wing rule.

We do not consent to the establishment and to corporate rule.

We do not consent to empire.

We do not consent to racism, misogyny, and xenophobia.

Be a part of our movement. Be a part of history.

We have much work to do. Let’s do it. Together. Exciting things are happening in the Green party, and you can be apart of it.

It’s in our hands.
